Custom-made knee replacement
Dear Ian,
The end of November marked my 6-month anniversary since I had my knee operation, and I knew it was time for me to say thank you properly for everything you have done to make me feel like a new person. I can’t believe how lucky I have been!
I am so pleased that I took the time to find an experienced knee specialist who I could trust. Having trolled through the internet, like you do, I read about so many different knee specialists, and to say I was confused at times is an understatement. When I came across your profile I was impressed by your specialism and was also extremely interested in your pioneering use of custom-made partial and total knee replacements. That was it – I made the decision to go ahead and see what you could do to help me.
When I met you at the London Sports Orthopaedics Clinic you made me feel comfortable and your experience and knowledge provided me with the confidence I needed. You were down to Earth and honest, and told me what I should be expecting from a total knee replacement and explained what a Conformis knee replacement would entail. You provided me with sufficient material for me to read before making my final decision. It didn’t take me long to arrive at the conclusion that I would like to go ahead and have my knee replaced. From that point onwards, the dedication and care I received from your team at Old Broad Street and London Bridge Hospital was first class.
My recovery and progress following surgery was absolutely amazing. Your suggestion that I should hire The Game Ready kit proved to be invaluable and certainly helped with reducing the post-surgery inflammation. In fact, it was only after I gave the kit back 6 weeks later that I realised how much it aided my recovery. You also told me before I left the hospital that I had to dedicate myself to doing my physiotherapy exercises and suggested I should hire a bike at home. I have done both. I also stopped taking any painkillers about 3 to 4 weeks post-surgery, which I was delighted with.
You advised me during my first consultation that it would be a good idea if I could have some physio pre-op to try and improve movement and reduce the swelling in my knee. Luckily for me I found an excellent physiotherapist, Alex Quinn, who had previously worked with you. He has proved also to be invaluable. His guidance, patience and experience in helping me gain the movement I have accomplished in the 6 months since my op is extraordinary. I have challenged myself during this time and have now been back at the gym for the past two months and feel fantastic – I go at least 3 to 4 times a week and walk at least 10,000 steps 5 times a week. The bend in my knee is 127+ degree and I am delighted with my progress, although my goal is to achieve 130.
To see me today, no one would ever know I have had a knee replacement, and for that I am truly thankful.
With very best wishes to you and your team
Kind regards
Maria Cadman
